What makes a gin navy strength?

The term "navy strength" originates from the British Royal Navy's method of testing a gin's potency by mixing it with gunpowder and igniting it. If the mixture lit, it proved the gin was strong enough – at least 57% ABV. Gin was often stored in barrels close to the ship’s gunpowder stores, and over long voyages, it was likely some might spill. Too little alcohol would waterlog the gunpowder and render it useless, so this navy proof test was a practical safeguard for both purity and purpose.

What is the strength of Navy Strength Gin?

Brass Lion Navy Strength Gin is bottled at a strength of 57% ABV, classifying it as an overproof gin. This high alcohol content not only intensifies its flavour profile but also ensures it stands up well in cocktails, delivering a robust and full-bodied experience.

Why is Navy Strength Gin higher ABV?

Historically, British officers added gin to quinine-based tonics to make the bitter medicine, which were used to prevent malaria, more palatable. The elevated ABV in navy strength gin ensured the spirit’s shelf life during long sea voyages and enhanced its bold, aromatic profile. Today, it’s prized for its richness and complexity in strong gin cocktails.

How do you drink Navy Strength Gin?

This high ABV gin is versatile and rewarding. For a refreshing serve, mix this premium gin with Indian tonic, garnish with a lemon peel, and add a pinch of sea salt. Its intensity also makes it perfect for strong gin cocktails and spirit-forward classics like the Negroni or Martini.
