Singapore's First Whisky

Brass Lion Distillery makes history by launching the country’s first ever whisky. Distilled, barrelled and aged entirely on our little island, Brass Lion Single Malt Whisky sets a new precedent for the local spirits industry.

“Experimentation is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s through flavours or technique, we always try to push the boundaries of what local distilleries can do. We had the resources to create a whisky, so why not? It was a challenge but being the first always is.” – Jamie Koh

Brass Lion Distillery worked with The General Brewing Co. to tailor-make a wash that would accommodate Singapore's high humidity and equatorial climate. They selected top-fermenting ale yeasts and Maris Otter malt, to yield a wash with fruity and complex flavours. Fermentation was done at local ambient temperature, which was possible due to the thermotolerant yeast used. 2000 litres of wash then underwent double distillation to obtain a precious 180 litres of new-make spirit. Finally it was all poured into a bourbon barrel to mature for over three years, adhering to international whisky standards and regulations.

About Singapore's First Whisky by Brass LionChoosing not to control the environmental temperature, Brass Lion Distillery has allowed Singapore's natural climate to shape the whisky. Unique climates in different regions significantly influence whisky maturation. Singapore’s tropical conditions, with higher temperatures and humidity,  speed up the process due to the accelerated contact between air, cask and spirit. The result is a more mature whisky in a much shorter time frame, with a depth and nuance in its flavour profile that’s often found in whiskies that have aged for far longer in temperate climates. With this momentous debut, Brass Lion Distillery wants to make its mark on the industry and place Singapore on the world stage by proving that quality whisky doesn’t just have to come from Scotland or Japan – it can come from anywhere, including our little island.

Making History

To celebrate the launch, we held a unique pop-up event held at our distillery. Through guided sessions, and experiential stations, guests were able to gain insight into the whisky making process, enjoy a whisky tasting, and a guaranteed chance to snag a coveted bottle.

Coming Soon - Whisky

The eagerly-anticipated whisky has been drawn from a single cask for this limited-edition release, with only 427 bottles available.

Tasting the spirit every six months, the flavours developed from malty and fruity notes, with biscuity aromas, in the first year to a smoother, more full-bodied spirit. The whisky’s accelerated maturation allowed for the enhanced extraction of tannins and oak notes from its bourbon cask, producing a complex whisky with wood-kissed notes of vanilla and dried fruit balanced by undertones of bitter almond and nutmeg spice.

The topographic lines of the area around Brass Lion in Alexandra Terrace has been used as motif for the whisky’s packaging, and the intricate curved lines adorning the sides of the box are reminiscent of wood grain, highlighting both the importance of the cask in the whisky-making process, as well as the unique region where the whisky was produced.
